The Spicada

The other day, Pete found a cicada shell clinging to the corner of the house. He showed it to Sarah, who decided she wanted to take it to school for show & tell. They put it in a zip-lock bag for safe keeping.

Sarah: Daddy, don't forget the spicada. I want to show it to my class.
Daddy: Okay.

She took it to school yesterday but forgot about it until after I picked her up. She then decided to throw a huge tantrum in the parking lot of the school! "I want to go back and show my friends the SPICADA!!" I remained very calm, told her to get in the car and that she could do that tomorrow. Of course that didn't help her, but we managed to drive home without incident.

This morning, I reminded her about the cicada. She perked up and smiled.

I really hope she remembers.

20 (MILLION) questions

Last night I was watching a 1st season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, specifically "The Arsenal of Freedom." If you're not familiar with this episode, here is a quick synopsis:

"While investigating the disappearance of the U.S.S. Drake on the planet Minos, the crew battles aggressive energy spheres, swallowing sinkholes and invisible attackers. Arriving at Minos, the crew is met by a prerecorded sales pitch for highly-advanced weaponry. This is not surprising, however, since the Minos people were renowned arms dealers during the Erselrope wars. While exploring the planet Riker, Data and Yar are attacked by an energy sphere. Lieutenant Yar destroys the sphere, but not before it traps Riker in a transparent cube. Then, after Picard and Dr. Crusher beam down to investigate the crisis, the ground swallows them into a subterranean cavern, seriously injuring Dr. Crusher."

Sarah came bebopping into our room during a scene with Picard & Crusher and began to ask me questions about the doctor's injuries:

Sarah: Mommy, what's wrong with her?
Me: She's hurt.
Sarah: Why?
Me: She fell down a hole.
Sarah: Why?
Me: Because they didn't see it and fell into it.
Sarah: Why?
Me: I guess the plants were covering it and they couldn't see it.
Sarah: Why were the plants covering it?
Me: I guess they grew over the hole.
Sarah: Why is she bleeding?
Me: Because she's hurt.
Sarah: Why?
Me: Because she fell down the hole.
Sarah: What's wrong with her?
Me: She's hurt.
Sarah: Where?
Me: I think her leg is broken and her arm, too.
Sarah: Why?
Me: Because she fell down the hole. (!!!!!!)
Sarah: Is she going to die?
Me: No.
Sarah: Why?
Me: Because she doesn't.
Sarah: Why is she going to sleep?
Me: She's in shock.
Sarah: Why?
Me: Because she's lost a lot of blood.
Sarah: Why?
Me: Because she fell down the hole and she's hurt. (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Sarah: Where is the doctor?
Me: She is the doctor.
Sarah: Where is her doctor?
Me: She doesn't have one.

(At this time, Picard is mashing up some roots to apply to the wounds in order to stop the bleeding.)

Sarah: What's he doing?
Me: He's mashing up those roots.
Sarah: Why?
Me: To stop the bleeding.
Sarah: Why?
Me: To stop the bleeding.
Sarah: What are roots?

Arrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhh! I quit answering after that... besides, it was her bed time and she skipped off to brush her teeth. Whew!

AC/DC

Last night:

Sarah: Daddy, what song is "Dirty things and the dungeon dirty?"
Daddy: Uhhh...
Sarah: Mommy!?
Me: Yes?
Sarah: What song is "Dirty things and the dungeon beep?"
Daddy: I have no idea.
Me: Hmmm. Oh! Do you mean "Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap?"
Daddy: Ohhhhhh!
Sarah: Yeah! "Dirty dungeons and the dungeon dirty!"

Birthday pictures!

Uncle Phillip (*coughfinallycough*) put Sarah's birthday pictures up in his gallery! And if I weren't such a slacker or so forgetful, we would have had some, too... but I am guilty on both counts. ;)

Anyway, enjoy!
