What's new in Sarah's world?

Anger management

On the way home yesterday, Sarah was telling me about her day at school:

Sarah: I was a very good girl, Mommy. I didn't cry and I didn't hurt anyone and I didn't have to sit out.
Me: That's great! I'm very proud of you!
Sarah: Yeah. And my head makes me mad.
Me: Your head makes you mad? (???)
Sarah: Uh huh. It makes me mad, and my body tells it to.
Me: Umm, your body?
Sarah: Yeah, my head makes me mad because my body tells it to do that. (I expected her to say, DUH, you idiot!)
Me: (totally confused - is she hearing voices??) Well, okay.

Aloha!

Each month, Sarah's class learns about a different country or location. For example, at the beginning of the school year, the kids learned about Belize. What a coincidence! Aunt Leslie and Uncle Burt go there every year on a medical mission with Outreach Abroad. We had lots of stuff from Belize Sarah could take to show her class - a t-shirt, a postcard, and some bracelets and emroidery made by the local people. It was really neat.

This month her class is learning about Hawaii. Here's the scene in the car yesterday afternoon:

Sarah: Mommy, I want to go to Hula.
Me: Hula? Do you mean Hawaii?
Sarah: Yes, Hawaii! I want to go there!
Me: (laughing) Me, too, but it's really expensive and far away.
Sarah: Can we go?
Me: Not today, but maybe soon.
Sarah: I have some money in my penny bank (yes, she calls it a penny bank).
Me: That's great, but we'll have to save up a lot of money to go.
Sarah: Can we go next week?
Me: No. Maybe in a few years.
Sarah: Look, Mommy. This is how girls dance in Hawaii (she attempts to hula in her car seat).
Me: Wow. That's great.
Sarah: Yeah. Boys don't do that. They can't dance the Hula. What do they dance?
Me: I don't know.
Sarah: Do they dance like this? (She puts her hands in front of her and moves them from side to side.)
Me: Um, sure.
Sarah: So can we go?
Me: You'll have to ask Daddy.

What time is it?

Sarah: Mommy, why don't I have a clock in my room?
Me: I don't know, sweetie.
Sarah: Hmm, I think I should have one. We should go buy one.
Me: Sure, okay.
Sarah: I want a "princess" clock.
